Hugh Crosthwaite Biography

Having studied under Australia’s finest composers (Broadstock, Greenbaum and Mills), Hugh has forged a successful career composing both commercial and independent art music. A powerful influence has been his love of the environment; as reflected in his piano concerto 'Mountain Ash' which was written in celebration of Victoria's forests and premiered in 2016. Additionally, Hugh collaborated with conceptual artist Tim Devine on a project about climate change called 'The [Uncertain] Four Seasons', based on Vivaldi's Violin concerto. This piece was broadcast in Australia and the UK and has enjoyed over 30 performances across almost every continent by world-class ensembles including NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra; Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra; and Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano.

Hugh’s compositions have been performed by some of Australia’s most esteemed musicians, and his recordings have featured on renowned Australian radio stations like ABC Melbourne, Triple J, and 3MBS. In addition to composing, Hugh has been active in the Melbourne Arts community, holding positions on several Arts boards including Melbourne Youth Orchestras (MYO) for which he is Deputy Chair.

Through the Human Rights Arts and Film Festival, Hugh created and produced 'The Key of Sea'; a collection of songs featuring a collaboration between a famous Australian artist (Paul Kelly, The Cat Empire and Sarah Blasko) and a refugee musician. The project raised circa $50,000 for charities supporting asylum seekers and human rights.

Hugh's current focus is on the release of his upcoming album 'Dusk Lullabies' (September 2026), which follows '16 Lullabies' (March 2020). Both albums comprise reflective, piano instrumentals for soothing babies/children as they grow, learn and sleep! Many of the lullabies have a dual purpose to also provide adults with comfort during life's ups and downs. Having become a father this year, the 'Dusk Lullabies' release represents a significant moment for Hugh and his family.
